The title focuses on the creation of Half-Life, but it also mentions past ideas the software company had at some point, but decided not to pursuit any further. A lost action RPG surrounding Axe is among those scraped ideas.
We almost got a RPG with Axe as main character 😳 pic.twitter.com/jvR3nZKVBs— Team Secret (@teamsecret) July 9, 2020
The company apparently discussed the idea of creating their first RPG in general, as developer Tejeev Kohli revealed. At one point, the team "experimented with flipping it into a single-player Dota RPG starring Axe".
It seems like the idea was put on hold, since Valve focussed on the development of other titles. However, Dota has already received two spin-offs in the last years: The card game Artifact in 2018 and the auto-battler Dota Underlords in 2019. Perhaps there are even more concepts waiting in line for new Dota related games in different genres.
22 years ago I first visited @valvesoftware to write about the making of the original Half-Life. Now, I'm back inside Valve to tell you about the past decade of development in The Final Hours of Half-Life: Alyx. What do you think: Would you have been excited for a Dota RPG, or do you just want to play the original game?
