The best contributions to the Short Film Contest

posted by SmittyW.,
The submission for the Dota 2 Short Film Contest closed on August 7. We compiled a list with a few pearls for you that you could vote for in the Steam Workshop. These pieces are by no means exhaustive. From May until August, many creative filmmakers made their contributions to this year's Short Film Contest. The contestants were asked to submit "short film creations of 90 seconds or less to the Dota 2 Steam Workshop", and many people followed Valve's call. The best entries are going to be shown during the The International 2019 broadcast. The top ten submissions will receive at least $500. The best three films will be awarded with $5,000, $10,000, and $25,000.

We cannot possibly show every good film submitted so we are going to show you some highlights. Make sure to check out the others too.

Parallel Universes

In Parallel Universes, Pudge gets blackholed into other dimensions that look deceptively like other computer games. Can you guess which games are being referenced?

Ziplash!

This clip pleasantly reminds one of the good old days when slapstick was en vogue in cartoons. We see a funny hunt with some of our favourite Dota 2 characters. Last year's winner Keller Max was involved in the production.

Will of the Lake

Will of the Lake is a bitter-sweet story about friendship and love. It leaves much room for interpretation and is incredibly well-made. Some shots are really beautiful!

Jungle Expedition

This piece is a Tarzan-esque story, featuring lots of Axes meeting a small expedition squad. With a lot of lovely details, funny ideas and a mighty "CEEEEEEEEEEB!", this one will surely win many hearts.

Never Mind

If you ever wondered what it would look like when the Dota characters would act like actual noobs, this film is just what you are looking for. A Sniper makes the lives of his team-mates miserable but turns the tide in a decisive moment.

The Story of One Hero

This piece makes a great impression not at least because of its unique cartoonish look. It also sums up perfectly, why Techies is such a "super popular" character.

Retro Dota 2 Commercial

This short film shows what a Dota 2 commercial could have looked like some 30 years ago. Especially people who grew up in the late 80s to mid 90s will recognize the unique style of video game commercials back then. Good old times.

Hunting Season

The last video we'd like to introduce is a Stoker-esque duel between Sniper and Nightcrawler. The fight between them isn't too spectacular, however, the look of the video is certainly outstanding.

Maxim Lebled, who won the contest from 2015 till 2017, did not submit any pieces this year. He recently worked on the OG documentary which might have taken up his time.

Which video do you like best?
