ana and OG setting records
Since the Major circuit started in the end of 2015, only two different teams won a Major. OG won four of them - and the last one exactly one year ago. The lineup of OG included three current TI winners back then: N0tail, ana and Jesse 'JerAx' Vainikka. Offlaner Sebastien 'Ceb' Debs was part of the lineup as a coach of the squad.
The other two players were Gustav 's4' Magnusson and Tal 'Fly' Aizik. This team had dominated the Dota 2 scene for the last couple of months before Kiev Major happened and of course, they were the favourites to win the trophy.
Virtus.pro's first Major success
They were in good shape during the group stage and lost only one game to Invictus Gaming with the star players Xu 'BurNIng' Zhilei and Ye 'BoBoKa' Zhibiao. Both top teams in the group stage were Team Secret and Virtus.pro were the two top teams in the group stage, with Ilya 'Lil' Ilyuk playing for the Russian outfit back then.
It was the first time they had a top-notch performance at a Major event - nobody thought that this could be OG's last Major success, while Virtus.pro's era would start right there.
Both teams made it into the Grand Finals by beating other favourites. OG defeated Evil Geniuses and Virtus.pro kicked the Chinese overlords iG out of the tournament.
The end and start of two Major eras
OG won the first game by their superior team effort - especially n0tail's carry position was an important factor. However, Virtus.pro fought back and took two games in a row. OG was close to losing their first Major Grand Finals. We could be talking hours and hours about this series, but the best way to re-live it, is to re-watch the True Sight episode of that tournament:
In the end OG won the series and crowned themselves as Major champion for the fourth time. That was the last "Valve Major" and with it OG's era ended. They lost at The International 2017 against PSG.LGD and finished in 7th-8th place. ana left and OG struggled in the new Dota 2 Pro Circuit until The International 2018.
Virtus.pro, on the other hand, also had a disappointing result at TI7 and finished in 5th-6th place. However, the new Dota 2 Pro Circuit was the start of their era: the Russian squad is the best team in the DPC for almost two years now. They're just waiting for the TI victory.
Which era has been more successful? OG's Major era or Virtus.pro in the DPC?
