Evil Geniuses have pulled it off: From open quals to TI8

posted by Abelle,
The haters have been silenced, for now. After a shaky group stage, Evil Geniuses have cruised through the playoffs to a spot at The International 2018. Evil Geniuses had a truly draining series to start the day, so their performance in the deciding match was rather impressive. They had taken a quick and one-sided first game against compLexity Gaming in their playoff opener, but laboured through a 81-minute roller coaster to take the series. EG largely held the lead, but compLexity repeatedly took fights that threatened to turn the game on its head.

After getting through coL, EG carried on straight into the next series. Immortals* had taken down OpTic Gaming in an epic match to start the day, and now they were waiting for their opponent in the deciding upper bracket match.

Despite powering through an extremely long game earlier in the day, EG picked Alchemist for Sumail 'SumaiL' Syed Hassan in the first game of the series. The midlaner turned offlaner turned midlaner again showed us all how it's done - buying a Radiance at 13 minutes and ending the game with 1.1k GPM and just a single, silly death.

In Game 2, EG got extra serious and pulled out the big guns. With Artour 'Arteezy' Babaev on Morphling, SumaiL on Templar Assassin and Andreas 'Cr1t-' Nielsen, EG managed to finish off Immortals in just under 18 minutes by taking a lane of barracks. All of this against a lineup with Lycan and Jakiro - not bad.

The win means that Evil Geniuses are the second NA team to qualify for TI8. They join Forward Gaming, who qualified on the weekend as the top team of the group stage (and winners of the 1st-3rd tiebreaker games). One more NA team will follow through the lower bracket decider, which will be played tonight between the winner of OpTic vs coL and Immortals.
