With the reveal of the ESL One Birmingham 2018, we can see which teams will face each other in the group stage. This volatile group stage will determine who will earn some of the final DPC points of the year.

Group A remains incomplete since ESL have not yet announced a replacement for Natus Vincere since a roster change led to them dropping out of the event. The groups have partially paired up teams from the same region - Newbee and LGD.Forever Young in Group C, plus OG and Team Liquid in Group B.

The opening match of Group A should be particularly interesting for Evil Geniuses fans - it pits the NA squad against former teammate Saahil 'Universe' Arora on Fnatic. The other member of that group so far? More classic EG rival Virtus.pro

The format of this group stage has some similarities to past ESL DPC events, but changes have been made to accomodate the 12-team structure. Instead of double elimination brackets, there will be three groups played in a GSL style.

The similarity comes from the fact that the opening round will be single-game series, meaning that the first teams to be eliminated will have lost a single game followed by a single best-of-three.

Two top teams from the groups will be determined via a three team round robin of single-game series. The third team will enter the playoffs in the quarterfinals alongside the three group stage runners-up. ESL explained their reasoning for using this format back when they first announced it.
