Many people on Twitter have either expressed annoyance with or joked about the attitude that Dota Plus is "pay to win". While the feature may help a player learn and improve in Dota 2, there's still a significant amount of hard work and effort needed from the player for that to mean anything.
Can someone who has access to Dota tell me if the suggestions from Dota+ assistant are even good?I instabought a year without even thinking but I'm demanding a refund if this doesn't immediately get me 1000 mmr— Ken Chen (@Hot_Bid) March 13, 2018
Admittedely I dont know every feature from Dota Plus yet, but so many redditors whining over it being "pay to win" amazes me. If it can contribute to improving players game knowledge over time, why not? I bet its the same people complaining over "noob teammates" holding you back.— Rasmus Blomdin (@ChessieDota) March 12, 2018
For only $3.99 I went from scrub to professional bounty player in only 36 mins! pic.twitter.com/3dFsuza5pv— shane (@shaneomad) March 13, 2018
Draskyl puts it the most bluntly, but makes a good point about the fact that Dota 2 and Valve are a business and businesses need to make money. For a lengthier explanation of a similar idea, check out /u/ShimmyZmizz' lengthy post from the perspective of a product manager.
Responses to our tweet and article yesterday were just as divided as opinion elsewhere, but we were very impressed with this well-written thought from @SylvanJonah.
Since it is not mandatory to purchase it, I am ok with it as long as I can play the game for free. People purchasing them will have slight advantage over others in terms of information? Go for it! Let's level up the playing experience. Improving players means more challenge.Leggo— Jonah Sabiniano (@SylvanJonah) March 13, 2018
The division in the community on this topic is perhaps best represented by the results of this poll tweeted out by TobiWan. At the time this article was written, the answers are sitting at 26%, 27%, 19% and 28% respectively.
To be clear, I haven't made up my mind up about @DOTA2 plus, the first reaction is never the lasy or indeed the right one. Quick community feeling:— Toby Dawson (@TobiWanDOTA) March 12, 2018
