PGL's decision to split $1 million amongst top 8 only causes a stir

A look at the finer details of the Bucharest Major revealed an interesting little fact, that only the top 8 finishers at the event will receive prize money.

9th-16th place to receive no prize money at upcoming Bucharest Major
With details of the upcoming Bucharest Major now in the public domain, it appears not only will PGL be adopting a new system for the groupstages, but they will also be focusing the prize pool on the top performers only. Although the event features 16 teams and a $1 million prizepool, only the top 8 finishers will receive prize money and DPC Points. It will be the first Major of the Pro Circuit to not award prize money to the 9th-16th place finishers.

However, although the prize money distribution attracted attention earlier today, there is only one previous Major to feature 16 teams and that was ESL One Katowice. At ESL One Katowice 9th to 12th each received $10,000 and 13th-16th received $5,000, meaning only 6% of the total prizepool went to 9th-16th place.

The distribution of prize money means that 1st place at the Bucharest Major is worth $500,000 compared to the $400,000 ru Virtus.pro received for winning ESL One Katowice last week.

Previous Major prize money distribution
ESL One Hamburg - All 8 teams received prize money
DreamLeague S8 - All 8 teams received prize money
ESL One Katowice - All 16 received prize money

Should all competing teams receive prize money?
