Wave goodbye to your MMR. A chance for a fresh start
As part of the upcoming update to be released on November 1st Valve have reworked how the matchmaking system works for ranked and unranked play. Instead of an ongoing leaderboard Valve will introduce seasons which last six months, the first will start in 2 weeks time "to give everyone a chance to prepare".
Valve said by doing so it "will ensure that MMR is both recent and accurate for all players, which will lead to better quality games for everyone". This means that everyone will lose their current MMR and recalibrate at the start of each season "seeded by their previous season's MMR".
Each season players will earn a medal based on their peak MMR that season, similar to Overwatch, Hearthstone and many other esports titles. There are a total of seven different medals and within each medal there are 5 stars to progress through to reach the next medal. More info
