LGD’s new roster performed reasonably well in several qualifiers in late 2016, but 2nd place in Summit 6, WCA 2016 and ESL One Genting qualifiers wasn’t quite enough to secure them a LAN spot. The Boston Major qualifiers rolled around, and LGD got off to a hot start in the round robin phase. They lost just one of their nine games, to iG Vitality, giving them an 8-1 record, but the playoff round was another story.

Their first opponent was the same team they had lost to in the round robin – iG.V. They lost 2-0, but they had another shot in the lower bracket. They beat EHOME.Keen 2-0, and advanced to the second qualification game. Unfortunately, iG.Vitality were waiting for them there, having been knocked down themselves by LFY. This time, LGD took a game off iG.V, but lost 2-1 and missed The Boston Major.

Or so it seemed. Execration had received a direct invite to the event, but failed to get visas in time for the event. Valve needed a replacement, and LGD’s inclusion was announced just a few days before the start of the group stage.

LGD will be replacing Execration at The Boston Major due to visa issues. They leave for Boston tomorrow. #BostonMajor pic.twitter.com/9Hzm6wdLCC— Wykrhm Reddy (@wykrhm) November 30, 2016

LGD had an excellent group stage record, going 4-0 after a pair of 2-0 wins against compLexity and Team Faceless. Faceless’ performance was a shock at the time after their incredibly dominant online play, but compLexity was a bit of an unknown quantity, especially given the fact that they beat Evil Geniuses twice in the same group.

Unluckily for them, they faced the opponent that knew them the best out of any team at the event their brother team LGD.Forever Young. Just like that, they were knocked out in the first round.
