CDEC’s success story in The International 2015 made history. The wildcard squad wowed the Dota 2 community eliminating favourites along the way and going all the way to the Grand Finals and ending their impressive performance as TI5’s runner-up. However, things have none gone as smoothly since patch 6.85, and the CDEC manager commented that they are here to learn and grow stronger.

In Frankfurt the spectators and opponents are already aware of potential CDEC quintet has. We had an opportunity to speak to CDEC’s manager Ziyu “ZY” Zhao, who spoke on behalf of his team regarding the pressure, preparations for the tournament and chances to win.

Your team’s run at TI became a true Cinderella story. This time there are big expectations for CDEC to perform well, do you feel any pressure?

After TI we had a long vacation, then the new patch was released. Things did not go well at that time. We did not play well and lost some matches, did not perform too well in Nanyang. Then we came here, to the Frankfurt Major. From the group stage we decided not to worry and just go step by step and try to adjust our strategy. We are doing better right now.

How high would you rate your chances to win in this tournament?

We are trying to become the winners. Right now we feel confident and have a good chance of beating other teams.

In the second round of the Upper Bracket CDEC is facing Evil Geniuses, the team that denied you the TI champions’ title. How does the team feel about this rematch?

We wanted to play against them. It is a bit too early but we really want to have our revenge for TI.

What do you think about Evil Geniuses and their line-up?

After TI we did not replace our players and they did. They might be not that strong anymore with the addition of new player.

Does your team enjoy more proactive or reactional playstyle?

We are going to play the game in our style; we will pick some heroes we want to pick and do it wisely.

Iceiceice mentioned in his interview that some Chinese teams did not treat the Frankfurt Major seriously bus CDEC seems to be very determined. How serious was your approach?

Prior to this event we had lots of matches to play, we were twice in US in October. We did not have that much time to practice. We came here to learn and to get stronger. The only bad thing here is the food, apart this we are all good.
