The Grand Final of The Defense will soon be upon us and everybody can't help but have their own opinions on who will emerge victorious between Na'Vi and Quantic. Being the first time these teams will face off against one another, the decision to predict a winner is indeed a tough one as there will be a lot of Cheese at stake.
To help you make up your mind a little better, joinDOTA has taken the liberty to ask three well known members of the DotA community, Kevin 'Purge' Godec, David 'Godz' Parker, and the beautiful Tammy 'furryfish' Tang questions about the Grand Final. Each participants were given five questions in which they give their insight and predict what we will be expecting from the Grand Final due 18:00 CET tomorrow. First off, who do you think will win the Grand Final and why?
Purge: I am predicting that Na'Vi will win with a 3-2 or a 3-1. I would be very surprised if Quantic took it 3-1. Na'Vi had very convincing wins over the last couple weeks over all of the top teams (though I don't recall the last time they played Quantic).
Godz: Na'Vi – they are the team with the experience and momentum (although they don’t even need the momentum to win any given match). They can just keep playing their style, execute their game plan, and even with a few mistakes or falling behind early they’ve shown they can win any game. Quantic will have to rely on a few of their players performing beyond their normal standard, which I think they are capable of doing, and I will be hoping to see as this is the Grand Final. Part of me is just worried we may see a quick 3-0 wipe though.
furryfish: I think Na'Vi will win the Grand Finals. Their performance recently has picked up in comparison to the temporary slump they have a few weeks back and their drafting and laning has been working out well recently.
All three predictors think Na'Vi will take the championship.
Let's analyse the final: Na`Vi and Quantic seem to both play mostly the same style, which utilizes early push to gain gold and map advantage. What do you think both the teams will do to outwit each other in this case? What will be the deciding factors?
Purge: I'm not sure what kind of outwitting will be done. Na'Vi has demonstrated in all of their matches last week that they can pick unplayed heroes and still win games, so I am not sure if outpicking them is possible. At the least, they will always have heroes they can play, though not all heroes are created equal. The deciding factors for the games will be the first 10-15 minutes. Early smoke ganks (especially towards the mid lane) followed up by quick towers will decide who gets the gold advantage and ultimately the win. Both teams have demonstrated that they have very good teamwork, and thus, an advantage is hard to lose.
Godz: Well they have a similar style, but NaVi are less restricted by heroes, not relying on heroes like Chen and Prophet. I think we may see NaVi trying some unusual picks such as the Sven/THD/Axe picks we've seen in the past from them. I think Quantic will stick to their regular style, but the game will come down to whether or not Quantic can raise their game and play the game of their lives. Haha, but really I feel Quantic have a very big ask, if they are to take some game(s) they have to step up the game. Miggel has played great and is very consistent, but Angel is prone to some silly mistakes and Link seems to have his good and bad games. If these two players can play to their full potential I think we’ll have some very exciting and close games.
furryfish:. I think we'll see both Enchantress and Chen being part of the first set of bans. I think Quantic will work on getting 4 pushing or catchers heroes with one hard carry for insurance should the game drag. Somewhat like their game against EG. As for NaVi, I'm hoping they come up with something cool to wow the audience. That's what they are known for - they're the innovators.
With the patch yesterday, Outworld Destroyer has been added into the Captains Mode. Do you think we will see any action from this hero? Besides that, which heroes do you expect will be key in these games?
Purge: I wouldn't be too surprised to see an OD pick somewhere in the finals, especially if Na"Vi win the first game and have a 2-0 lead. OD is occasionally and rare in WC3 Dota. He hits digustingly hard in the mid-game with free farm, arguably more than any other hard carry though getting there is the hard part since early smoke ganks and pushing is so popular, and he doesn't have much survivability without items. If he gets drafted I would expect a safe lane solo (Radiant bot or Dire top) against another solo like Windrunner. Key heroes are going to be Chen and/or Enchantress, moreso on Enchant as I expect Chen to be banned in most games. Invoker and Natures Prophet will be played if unpicked, and I think Na'Vi will continue to ban Dark Seer in the first round. I am expecting there to be at least 1 Pudge game from Na"vi as well since they will be playing Euro host.
Godz: OD is a very viable hero that can win games and definitely fit into the meta-game. It will be up to whether or not these teams feel comfortable with it, as it's not a hero that truly fits their styles that well. Key heroes will be the jungling heroes of enchantress/chen which both teams will look to pick up as well as Prophet i imagine. I think we may even see AM sneak through the pool as teams may focus their bans on chen/ench/wr/prophet and play a part in this finals.
furryfish: Yeah hopefully that we get to see OD. I have been having a huge lot of fun playing it recently. Therefore, I'm hoping the first 4 bans will be Anti-Mage, Invoker, Enchantress, and Chen. That will open up OD for first picks. In any case, Na'Vi has been using Venomancer, Leshrac, and Winrunner a lot of late. So I think we should see this set of combos coming out from them. Quantic would most probably go for Enigma and Shadow Shaman as priority.
Who will be the MVP of the Grand Final?
Purge: I am not sure who the MVP will be. I think both teams have some very crucial players who can perform very well. It just comes down to who plays best I think.
Godz: Dendi and Miggel - Dendi is at the moment the most consistent and skilled player in Dota 2. Miggel rarely makes any mistakes and is the player who sets the tempo for his team and seems to really lead them well.
furryfish: MVPs will be Dendi and Link!
What do you think has been the most memorable scene and game of The Defense so far?
Purge: I think my most memorable scene from the Defense was the game where Quantic, 5 man black holed followed by a Ravage. Despite that, with a Necrolyte, Mek, and Pipe, they were able to keep everyone alive and pull out a teamfight win. I loved that moment because that was a point where the math was demonstrated. They had exactly the right items with just enough teamfight contribution and it just barely won them the teamfight. Some times the little advantages matter in Dota and that was exactly what we saw in that moment. I was very happy to be casting that game live when it happened. (Quantic vs GDT)
Godz: The tourney feels as if it's been going on for half a year ! I can hardly even remember the group stages! Some of the loser bracket games have been very exciting, the winner bracket semifinals and final were all quite one-sided though.
furryfish: My most memorable moment of The Defense is the imba black hole in the Dire's forest from the Quantic vs. EG loser bracket final. EG managed to pick two heroes off and the black hole just completely turned the tide around and even out the kills. (Quantic vs. EG)
Toby 'Tobi Wan' Dawson will also be making a two hour special prior to the game at 16:00 CET tomorrow to talk about his own predictions and a general overview of the tournament as a whole. Troels 'syndereN' Nielsen who flew in all the way from Denmark will also be joining Toby in our joinDOTA studios to shoutcast and give his piece of mind about the Grand Final.
Who do you think will win The Defense? Cast your votes here and feel free to guess how many viewers the stream would hit tomorrow here.
We shall see you on the battlefield tomorrow and may the best team win.
