Six Locations where The International 2021 could take place

posted by Stoeckers,
It is unclear if TI10 will take place in Sweden or in another European country. Today we will take a look at possible alternatives across Europe. As you might know by now, the right place for The International 2021 is yet to be decided. The biggest Dota 2 event of the year was supposed to take place in Sweden. But due to political decisions the tournament isn't qualified for the same exemptions as other elite sporting events. Therefore it is diffcult to host The International in Sweden and Valve is looking for an alternative venue in europe.

Back to the roots

One possible alternative to host The International could be Germany. Even though esports isn't officially recognised as sports, Germany has a huge history of hosting big esport events, most notably the ESL One in Hamburg, Frankfurt or The International 2011 in Cologne. It would also be a nice story to come back to Germany where it all started ten years ago.

Furthermore eSport-Bund Deutschland (eSports Federation Germany) vice president Chris Flato has presented Germany as the perfect alternative. He said: "We have the locations, the organisers, enthusiastic fans and even the option to apply for short and long term visas for professional players". Omid Nouripour, the sports politician of the green political party, also pointed out that Frankfurt would make for a perfect venue for The International.

The East awaits

The last Dota 2 major took place in Kiev and was organised by WePlay. It was the first Major that was played offline in Europe since the start of the pandemic. Therefore it's an alternative that's already passed the test, which would guarantee pro players to be able to compete on-site. After the controversy in Sweden, this could just be the level of safety Valve needs.

As a huge esports nation, Poland could be another possible host country. Especially Katowice is know for its big esport events like the Intel Extreme Masters or the ESL One. Furthermore the COVID-19 infection rates are quite low and the restrictions rather relaxed (which is not to say that Valve should opt for a solution that neglects the safety of fans, players and talent).

What about Iceland or Disneyland?

Iceland is the European country with the lowest number of coronavirus infections, virtually going towards zero. It could be a safe place for The International as well. With the organisation of the Mid-Season Invitational in League of Legends and the VCT Masters Reykjavík in VALORANT competitor Riot Games also has shown how it's done. Eventhough it seems like a far fetch, it could be the perfect venue for Valve.

Another possible venue for he biggest Dota 2 tournament of the year could be in Paris, France - Disneyland Paris to be correct. In 2019 they already hosted the MDL Disneyland Paris Major and therefore it could be the perfect place for our pros to compete in the first TI after the pandemic started.

But there are obviously many more places that would be a perfect fit for The International 2021. Denmark for example is close to Sweden and has a well-developed esports structure that you can especially see with events such as ESL One Odense in CS:GO.

Where do you think TI10 will end up?
