Organisers WePlay! invited 32 players from across the card game universe to compete in their opening Artifact tournament, including some of the most well-known names from Hearthstone, Magic the Gathering and Gwent, to name a few.
Stars of the genre such as Reynad, Lifecoach, Dog, DrHippi, Hoej and Lothar battled through a double-elimination group stage, with the top two making it to the best-of-three Playoffs. As one of the pre-tournament favourites, Hyped was expected to go far.

He breezed through his group, taking down both MissQingQing886 and Lothar 2-0 for a perfect record. He then took down DrHippi in the Round of 16 in a 2-1 comeback win, before a much-anticipated duel with Lifecoach in the Quarterfinals.
He sealed his spot in the Grand Final with a 2-0 win over LuckBox (formerly known as StanCifka) that wasn’t all plain sailing — the first game was a close affair, while a disconnect almost derailed the second.
His opponent in the final was Frederik “Hoej” Nielsen, who had been on for an unbeaten tournament before coming up against Hyped. 2-0 Group Stage wins against Rdu and Myragut were followed by 2-0 knockout wins over Naiman, Xixo and MieGod — a late replacement for Hearthstone player Cydonia. The second game was notable for being the fastest of the entire tournament, over in just five rounds of play.
Our @PlayArtifact tournament is over and lots of great moments are staying behind. But we've got very good friends. We want to say thank you to our casters @swimstrim @thatCHARM3R @ImpetuousPanda @MegaMogwai and @SUNSfanTV. Our tournament wouldn't be so amazing without you ❤️ pic.twitter.com/FwXnhdWrOO— WePlay! As the name suggests, this is not a solitary tournament. Hyped and the rest of the top 16 players now qualify for the next stage, Agility, which features an increased $15,000 prize pool. This will take place in January.
A third event to round out the Triad, Intelligence, will offer $25,000 up to competitors. Both events will feature an open qualifier.
What do you make of competitive Artifact so far?
