A small update to the game earlier this week brought reduced MMR for some players that had been using the Battle Pass' Team challenge tokens to climb the ranks. The full text of Valve's update reads:

In today’s update we’ve fixed an issue with the MMR awarded by team challenges. The intended behavior of team challenge tokens is to allow a party to play against a significantly more difficult opponent, and to adjust MMR by an amount relative to that difficulty using the normal MMR formula. However, an update we released fairly recently caused this calculation to overcorrect, resulting in players getting significantly more MMR for wins. We’ve started correcting the MMR and rank medals of accounts affected, but this process may take a day or two to complete.

As you may have noticed from an increasing number of memes and complaint threads on r/dota2, people have been raking in the MMR thanks to the Team challenge tokens. Five-stack Dota has been an odd place for the last couple of weeks, but now it should be back to something closer to "normal".

Even our own Product Manager here at joinDOTA has found himself a few ranks short after Valve's decision to nerf the tokens. As he told us, "I gained 6 ranks but was robbed of them all - from Legend 3 to Ancient 3 back to Legend 4."

If you're feeling bad about losing those ranks, you can take some comfort in the other part of Valve's announcement - the rank reset. According to the post, the first season of MMR will end "in the coming week or so". That's pretty classic Valve time phrasing, but at least they didn't say "soon".
