Saving the strangest for last: ESL Genting invites Fnatic

With open qualifiers just a couple of days away, ESL are wrapping up the last of their direct invites to ESL One Genting 2018.
Welcome to #ESLOne Genting - @ViCi_Gaming!The Chinese powerhouse is our 7th direct invite.— ESL Dota2 (@ESLDota2) December 6, 2017

cn Vici Gaming were the first invite announced today and the second Chinese team to be invited to the event, after cn Newbee. China is now the second region to have two direct invites, the first being Europe with both eu Team Liquid and eu Team Secret.

This is Vici Gaming's first direct invite this season, but after taking second place both the AMD Sapphire Dota Pit Minor and The Perfect World Masters, the last two events they qualified for, they've shown that they're one of the strongest teams in both China and the world right now.

Completing our direct invites for #ESLOne Genting are none other than @FNATIC!— ESL Dota2 (@ESLDota2) December 6, 2017

world Fnatic are one of the stronger teams in SEA, but this invite is surprising given their lack of results so far this season. Fnatic attended ESL One Hamburg as the last-minute replacement for ph HappyFeet, who were unable to attend due to visa issues. They also competed at Dota Pit after Mineski dropped out, but finished 7th-8th at both events.

Things have been looking a bit better for the squad since their relatively strong performance in the DreamLeague Season 8 and DOTA Summit 8 qualifiers though, so if ESL were dead set on inviting a second SEA team to Genting then they've made a good choice.

According to a recent tweet from ESL Dota 2 a ninth invite slot remains, but ESL are also saying that this eigth invite to Fnatic completes the list. It seems we'll have to wait and see just what ESL have planned for the mysterious ninth slot.
