The format for the upcoming Kiev Major has been added to the Compendium and it seems Valve will keep the single elimination format.

As usual preceding the playoffs will be a groupstage, the format of which has not been announced. At the Boston Major the 16 teams were divided into four double elimination groups, which meant less matches were played but two teams despite being in the same group could actually end up never playing each other.

There is the choice to make the groupstages round-robin, something that players such as sg Daryl Koh 'iceiceice' Pei Xiang have been vocally in favour of in the past.

The decision to retain a single elimination playoffs means of course there is no lower-bracket, and that seeding for the playoffs would be determined by a team's placement in the groups. At TI6 for example teams that performed poorly in the groups were sentenced to a bo1 first round in the lower-bracket, this reduced match time but also risked a top team being knocked out earlier than expected.

The entire Kiev Major plays off will be best-of-3 with a best-of-5 for the Grand Finals. Considering the Boston Major had a similar playoff format and was heralded as a great success, there should not be too many opposed to the idea.
