Gabe Newell revealed that The International might be hosted in New Zealand in the future. While he did not confirm any fixed plans, he stated that there is a "realistic possibility". Co-founder and president of Valve Gabe Newell shared thoughts about bringing The International to New Zealand, as stated in an interview with New Zealand television network 1 NEWS on Wednesday, 20 January.

Moving Valve to New Zealand?

Gabe Newell himself is currently residing in the Oceanic nation. After visiting the country with family and friends for a holiday trip in early 2020, they decided to stay there due to the pandemic. He has been granted New Zealand residency in principle and even plans to acquire full citizenship.

Not only does Newell intend to stay there for the foreseeable future, but he revealed that several Valve employees were also interested in moving to New Zealand. He also stated that infrastructure in New Zealand would suit a game development company.

The 58-year-old explained that a new requirement was added when it comes to managing a company. In the past, factors such as a fast internet connection were considered. Now, a good public health infrastructure is a new element to consider.

Tournaments such as TI could realistically be moved

While he does not intend on making any fast, significant changes, a potential shift of the company could also result in their tournaments being moved. Newell explains that as long as the coronavirus keeps mutating, it is increasing the likelihood that Valve could host events in New Zealand. It is a realistic possibility for him, and the chances are rising all the time.

When asked if Newell is currently playing games himself, he confirmed he was. And apparently, he seems to be pretty active in Dota 2, as he even converted his travel buddies to Dota players. He also sounds like the average Dota player, as he joked that what he really desires is to get them to play the way he wants them to. When asked if he is making a clan, Newell laughed: "I am making a clan, yes — a cannibal clan."

The interview continued about other games and topics, such as Newell's opinion about Cyberpunk 2077. You can find the interview and additional information on the homepage of 1 NEWS.
