Talking about the ancient artifacts such as Aghanim's or Black King Bar, the cheese is one of the oldest "artifacts" in DotA's history. It dates back to WC 3: RoC, Eul's version. There was a furbolg that "hid" in the trees in the middle lane that sold cheese, that restored (I think) 300 hp and 150 mana. Back then, consumables were a set amount of recovery and instant, so were a BIG part in competitive gameplay, and cheese was highly sought after. It didn't spawn immediately, there was only one in stock, cost 275g (g was not as easily gained in RoC), healed both HP and mana, and had a rather lengthy cd for re-buying. As I said, it was a very pivotal item for competitive play :)
