EG.Maelk weighs in on The Defense

We are gearing up for The Defense grand finals! So are the four teams in the final stretch of the tournament, with us Evil Geniuses having a bootcamp in Denmark right now, team captain, dk Jacob 'Maelk' Toft-Anderssen weighs in on their chances in the upcoming winner bracket finals.

Maelk at DreamHack Summer 2012

EG just recently defeated DK – one of the best DotA teams in the world – 2:0 in the BTS World Tour. How did it feel to beat such prominent team?

When you put a lot of hours into practicing and perfecting your play, as we currently are, it’s really nice to win games against such noteworthy teams as we have lately. We don’t really put too much thought into it though, as it is merely an online match and most teams are probably focusing on saving strategies for The International.

Burning had a lot of farm on his Facelss Void (Midas + Battlefurry in 14 minutes) but he opted to go for an Aghanim’s scepter/Refresher Orb build. First of all, were you concerned with the Void pick by DK and the potential threat that it could have been? and what do think of his build?

I wouldn’t say we were particularly concerned, especially not considering we had already picked Tiny who’s Craggy Exterior virtually makes it impossible for Faceless Void to fight him late game. At first, we actually thought their combo would cause a threat to us, since Leshrac and Sand King would have an easy time putting in damage in the Chronosphere. But I don’t know if it was well played splitting by us, or lag and poor decision making on BurNings’ end that caused it to not really pose much of a threat.

Playing against Chinese teams always leads to arguments about pings and lag. Based off your experience, could you clarify what the playing conditions like?

I don’t know how packet loss and all that fuss influences the Chinese connections, but according to the pings it seemed about even. We have been practicing a lot against all of the Chinese teams lately, and neither of them seem to be complaining about it.

That being said, I’m sure it’s less than desirable for them to play online internationally and as such I don’t really put too much into neither their losses nor our victories. It’s just good practice for both sides I assume.

His answer should have been:
It's easy to win when the opponent has 1234213 k of ping and has no time to properly react to anything because of constant lag and delay.

Anyways, good interview.

This is why people should just STFU about this team or that team being weak etc and just wait for TI2.
