Because if so, the logic on that site given for having only 5 continents is not even internally consistent.

So since this has become a discussion about geography and continents, I'll add my input. Since geography isn't an exact science, there doesn't have to be a consensus on the number of continents in the world. They can be counted by continuous landmass or by culture or by any other standards. The two most common methods are the ones I mentioned, and by both North America is considered a different continent from South America (remember the Panama Canal. It actually divided what was a single continent in two. As for the cultural differences I think it's safe to assume everyone knows North and South/Central America aren't similar at all).

So if America is one continent, why isn't Europe and Asia considered one continent?

Are people here too fucking dense to realize that depending on where you live, you are taught different geographical systems? There are geographical systems that only have 4 continents and one with 5, 6 and even 7.

Here in Russia we learn that there is 7 continents and 5 "parts of the world(part of the light is the direct translation)". But google says that those two termins are the same in English, some dictionaries translate it as "mainland". So i dunno who is right;D
