The dramatic events that have surrounded the second season of DreamLeague lately doesn't seem to end. When my Team Malaysia withdrew from the Asian division of the tournament and a replacement team had to be found, more problems arose. The Filipino team ph Rave became the substituting team in the end, which upset the teams that had more rights to it.

With the invited Team Malaysia had to leave the tournament, a second SEA team was to be found to play in the division alongside kr MVP Phoenix, who placed first in the open qualifier. The runner-up vn NVIDIA Aces declined the invitation which eventually gave ph Rave a chance to participate, an offer they gladly accepted.

What isn't mentioned in DreamLeague's article is that there were teams more eligible to fill the spot than Rave. The double elimination bracket of the RO128 qualifier clearly shows that there were many teams ahead of the Filipino team, who placed 9th-12th.

Open qualifier results

1st - kr MVP Phoenix
2nd - vn NVIDIA Aces
3rd - au Can't Say Wips
4th - my Arrow Gaming

The Australian squad au Can't Say Wips who performed better in the qualifier was contacted by a DreamLeague admin prior to the decision, who offered them the spot. Unfourtunately they were unable to respond due to the time zone difference as the players were asleep at the time. The pressure of time led to DreamLeague reaching out to other teams simultaneously, of whom Rave was the quickest to respond. joinDOTA recieved the following statement from CSW captain au Darcy 'Godot' Jose:

Earlier today DreamLeague announced that Rave would be replacing Team Malaysia in the Asian qualifier for DreamLeague season 2, stipulating that they were the third place finishers of the open qualifiers. We would like to express our disagreement with their decision and articulate our side of the story. I received a skype add from a DreamLeague admin today at 6pm AEST, but was sleeping and unable to reply until 10pm AEST. During this time DreamLeague has told us that they also contacted Rave regarding who would replace Team Malaysia in the main qualifier for DreamLeague season 2. By the time I woke up DreamLeague had already been in contact with Rave and decided based on their ability to contact them first that Rave would in fact replace Team Malaysia, despite the fact that we finished third in the qualifier whilst Rave failed to make the top 5.

When we found out what had happened we contacted DreamLeague and asked them why they had stated that Rave had come third, and given them the qualifier spot. They responded by telling us that they were short on time and so gave the spot to Rave because they replied to their communications first, and that saying they came third was merely an editorial mistake born from a miscommunication between Hellspawn and the admin in charge of the open qualifier. We then expressed our disagreement with this decision, given that it had no basis on in-game performance. We were subsequently told, with condolences, that nothing would be done to change the decision and that Rave would maintain their place in the main qualifier. We are understandably disappointed by this decision, as we had hoped that the DreamLeague administration would rectify their mistake.

Thank you to all our fans that have, and are supporting us, we will continue to converse with the DreamLeague administration to see if something can be done in the coming days.

UPDATE:

A DreamLeague employee with the username 'Adebisi_X' made the following statement on reddit:

Obviously the whole circumstance is less than ideal. To clarify what exactly happened is that first, Team Malaysia withdrew yesterday, we believed this morning that NVIDIA Aces would take their place, unfortunately this morning, they also decided against participation. From here we had a very limited timeframe to get a schedule complete (given that the entire division is already underway) and so we contacted both csW and Rave, Rave responded immediately and csW did not, therefore we moved ahead with Rave. Within the past couple of hours we did get in contact with csW and they expressed disappointment. Unfortunately given the extremely short timeframe we were not able to contact all teams who placed highly in the open qualifier, and the most important priority was to find any replacement team to make sure the division would have four teams and be fair relative to the other divisions.

It was an editorial mistake on our website to say it was the 3rd place team replacing Team Malaysia, the slot was designated as an invite, however nonetheless we would have preferred for a top placing qualifier team to replace them, in this case at the time it felt as the lesser evil to take a team that could commit, as oppose to risk having a division with only 3 teams.

Overall at this time I don't have much else to add other than we are fully aware of how disappointed much of the community is about the issues surrounding DreamLeague thusfar, and don't want to get into excuses, and only leave it that we are putting full efforts into producing the best possible League and hopefully people will still tune in and in the future we can move past these issues.
