UPDATE: Upon further testing, it has been confirmed that Dota 2 still requires a beta key to play for new users. The client currently only allows new users to play the first tutorial and then reverts to the Spectators client.

Any word of an Open Beta were false, and we take full responsibility for not being diligent enough in confirming rumoured functionality changes.

The incident began with the addition of the above "What does a hero truly need" trailer to the game client with the latest Dota 2 patch, as well as a changing of the wording on the Dota2.com page, where the box which previously advertised sigining up for the Beta instead now read "Get it now on Steam".

These factors together caused rumours to start going about a silent open beta release for all currently active areas using the normal Steam client, which would exclude China. With the rush of the news cycle both GosuGamers and joinDOTA made the same mistake of creating new accounts, trying out that the client worked and trying out the tutorial, but did not take the final step of making sure the client was capable of playing actual games. This was a grave mistake which stemmed from out ignorance of the existing spectator client.

We're sorry for what has happened and will aim to be more diligent in checking similar details in the future.
